Murnau made this poetic-realistic masterpiece in 1928/29 but it was shelved until 1930 when it was finally released in a bastardized talkie-hybrid using footage shot after Murnau quit.  Decades passed before the original cut was restored--and here it is, on 1080p Blu-Ray from Masters of Cinema, with an audio commentary by me to help put it into context in Murnau's career.

Fritz Lang's masterpiece from 1933 gets the full Criterion Collection treatment in this deluxe package. I provide an audio commentary on the definitive restoration on disc 1, while disc 2 presents the French version (shot with a different cast!) and a featurette I made dissecting the differences between the German, French, and American versions.
